Panel talk at Stockholm Pride: Is dating applications turning us into emotionless cyborgs?

August 3, 2022 @ 14:00 - 14:45

Rainbow Refugees takes part of Stockholm Pride. Panel talk:

Dating applications have revolutionized the way that LGBTQ individuals meet. Simultaneously, studies show that they drain the LGBTQ community of other ways to meet. In this panel, two researchers discuss how dating apps have changed the lives of LGBTQ individuals and how it can affect newly arrived migrants.

Newly arrived LGBTQ migrants often lack nuclear family and social networks that can aid them socially, economically and emotionally. Like other internal migrants, they seek likeminded individuals through dating applications to build up their networks. While they histircally would have been forced to move to larger cities where there were bars, clubs, cafees, they can now find likeminded all over Sweden. But what disadvantages comes from using dating apps? During this panel Daniel Hedlund, associate professor in Legal Sociology at Stockholm University, and Thomas Wimark, associate professor in Human Geography at Uppsala University, discuss how dating applications affect our lives using their latest research.

Please note the talk will be in English.
